PRP, which stands for Platelet Rich Plasma, is a regenerative therapy that has become very popular over the past 10 years. This therapy takes advantage of the growth factors found in the patient’s own platelets. While platelets are found in the general blood, they are highly concentrated specifically in the patient’s plasma, thus making a patient’s plasma full of the desired growth factors. By harvesting the patient’s plasma, treating medical providers are able to inject affected joints with the growth factors and trigger regenerative effects.
PRP Injections are an in-office procedure performed by your treating physician. The procedure itself takes an average of 30 minutes; however, patients should allocate 60 minutes for prep and post procedure instructions.
Does PRP hurt?The initial blood draw should not be painful but can cause some minor discomfort. The actual PRP injection feels similar to any Cortisol Steroid injection and is not expected to be over uncomfortable.
What is the recovery time?You are able to go home directly following the procedure. We do advise that the patient take it easy for the remainder of the day. The blood draw area should not be sore; however, there may be some discomfort in the injection site following the procedure for a few days.
What is the cost of the procedure?PRP Injections, while cleared by the FDA, is not covered by insurance companies currently. The self-pay rate for just the PRP injection kit is $500/joint. The self pay rate for the PRP injection kit + procedure (if not allowable by insurance) is $1,500/joint.
