With the popularity of sport in America, young athletes continue to participate in sport year-round. Unfortunately, the three-sport athlete has become an endangered species. As families pursue playing time, scholarships, and improved sport performance there has been a move toward early sport-specialization. As young athletes migrate to a specific sport, there has been an increase in overuse injuries and trauma in that population. Over 3.5 million children aged 14 and younger are treated for sports-related injuries according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In an effort to reduce the injuries occurring to our youth athletes in Atlanta, Dr. Levengood and Sports Medicine South have joined the STOP Sports Injuries community education initiative that helps provide information to parents, coaches and youth athletes. With basketball season just starting, we have included a basketball-specific tip sheet from STOP Sports Injuries. For more information on overuse injuries, call our office to speak with one of our staff.
